Windmills on the fortifications, Heusden, the Netherlands

            Windmills were often built on top of the fortifications of a city. The bastions were high up, so the mill could catch more wind.
Heusden has three windmills in that position. All three are so-called 'post mills', because the whole mill can be turned around a central 'post'. This type of mill was the first built in Holland: they were used from around 1200 AD.
The mills in Heusden are not that old: they were built in the 1970s as part of the restoration and reconstruction of the city's fortifications. But still a very pretty sight!
