Steam's Twilight at Lowca - a photo on Flickriver

            'Amazon' shunting BR 21-ton hopper wagons at Harrington Coal Preparation Plant on 12th March 1973, just two months before final closure. The full extent of the west end of the plant is visible in this image, with the locomotive shed and tar works sidings off to the left and the landsale yard being shunted by 'Amazon'. Sister locomotive 'Warspite' was in action lower down at the washery and steam emitting from it can just be seen far right. Lowca Colliery ceased winding in July 1968, but continued to wash coal from Solway Pit, which was brought in by BR to Bains exchange sidings via Parton. The processed coal was then returned to Workington for the steelworks via the Lowca Light Railway, which continued away from the left of this image. Amazon (Vulcan Foundry works No.5297 built in 1945) was originally a Sutton Manor Colliery engine before coming to Lowca in September 1967. This was unfortunately to be my last visit to see the plant working and in fact the very last transparency that I took there, although it is rather backlit and 'contrasty' it holds a special place in my collection. Harrington Coal Preparation Plant's life-blood was the supply of coal from Solway Colliery and, when this loss-making pit closed in May 1973, Harrington Washery also closed, the final day of operation being 26th May 1973.
