Hang tente de gagner sa vie comme ouvrière dans une usine en URSS. Dans le train qui la conduit à Moscou, elle est appelée au chevet de son oncle malade, l'occasion pour elle d'une plongée dans un passé douloureux. L'oncle Chinh, membre zélé du Parti communiste, a été l'un des ardents serviteurs de la réforme agraire au Vietnam. La mère de Hang, par piété fraternelle et par respect des traditions, n'a jamais osé s'opposer à son frère. Pas même quand il a obligé son mari, instituteur, à fuir le village, dédaignant la classe de sa famille, ces "ennemis mortels de la paysannerie". Contrainte de s'installer à Hanoi et d'y élever seule sa fille, c'est elle qui subviendra aux besoins de Chinh, incapable de nourrir ses enfants avec sa maigre solde de fonctionnaire. Dans ce livre de jeunesse, Duong Thu Huong, en pointant à travers un drame familial, une tragédie collective, interroge déjà le paradis marxiste celui de tous les aveuglements.
