Izzeddin Fortress Kalami Crete - a photo on Flickriver

            The Izzeddin Fortress is an Ottoman fortress in Souda Bay. It was built in 1872 to protect the entrance to Souda Bay and in the 20th centuary was used as a prison for political prisoners. Its occupants included Eleftherios Venizelos.The last death sentence was carried out here in 1972. The last execution took place on 25 August 1972, when the 27-year-old Vassilis Lymberis was shot by firing squad for the murder of his wife, mother-in-law and two children (he burned them alive inside their house) on the island of Crete. The prison finally closed in 1974.
