Neofinetia falcata 'Tamakongo': the root problem

            In nature Neo. falcata produces very long, dense root masses.  I find that the species grows very well if the roots are allowed to grow like this.  However, the Japanese seem to routinely grow them in pots and most certainly judge them in pots.  There will be Japanese-style judging at the Orchid Fair next month, and I am wondering how to pot this up and retain the proper balance between plant size and pot size.  It seems to me that if I really prune the roots I risk some loss of lower leaves.  Perhaps if one repots every year and really sticks to the best time to do it, plant growth and root containment would work out a bit better.
