            View of the island from an aircraft fron the carriers Essex (CV-9).

The top photo shows the so called "Pocket", the last position defended by the Japanese troops. In the foreground are two concrete positions for 127-mm anti-aircraft guns.

The battle for the island Bikenibeu, Tarawa Atoll, which lasted from 20 to November 23, 1943. Only with the Japanese side in the battles of Tarawa survived only one officer, 16 soldiers and 129 Koreans workers of 4836 Japanese and Koreans living on the island before the u.s. invasion. 2-United States Marine Corps Division lost in battles human 894 killed (48 officers and 846 soldiers) 84 (8 officers and 76 soldiers) died of wounds after the battle. 2188 persons were injured, including 102 officers and 2086 other ranks.
