Stationery Office Silk Cleansing Fluid Tin 1970s/1980s

            Some will remember the days when internal mass produced documents were produced on an ink duplicator, usually a Gestetner, having been typed onto "skins".  Now superseded by computers and laser and ink jet printers; no more sniffing correctine fluid to rectify typo errors, no more messy ink gel smeared over the silk screen and then documents churned out by hand cranking or, if sophisticated, using electricity. This tin also harks back to the days when Her Majesty's Stationery Office was still a government department rather than an agency.

When in Hong Kong, at Fanling Police Station, I was responsible for producing the battalion weekly intelligence summary (intsum), collating the information, processing it and typing it up.  My only help was a rifle company soldier seconded to me.  After I had produced the first intsum I asked him if he could operate a Gestetner.  He assured me he could, having used one for the company sergeant major of B Company. I entrusted my skins to him and he went away to run off about thirty copies of the intsum, probably about forty pages with annexes and appendices.  He returned much later covered in ink from head to foot, all my skins in shreds - "sorry corporal" was all he could say, sheepishly. After retyping the intsum I ran it off myself.  After this I only let him make the coffee!
