East German Bowl 1980s

            A relic of our service in Berlin, a small melamine-like bowl bought for EM2.50 in the Centrum department store on Alexanderplatz in East Berlin. These were very durable items, ideal for camping and picnics, and we once had quite a lot of items. With no inflation in East Germany, in common with a lot of their consumer goods, the price was incorporated into the material; no weekly price hikes! It has the manufacturer’s mark “CP”, and these also appear on some ceramic items we purchased in East Berlin.

We bought east marks in West Berlin at an exchange rate of never less than about 8.50 east marks for 1 Deutschmark. Since the DM was about 3.5 for £1, this bowl was very cheap indeed!
