Grand Turk waterfront, Turks and Caicos Islands

This is very near the site where Christopher Columbus is thought to have landed in the Turks and Caicos Islands group in 1492.  Another famous 'explorer', John Glenn, landed in the waters just off TCI in 1962 after his historic three-orbit space flight.

The Turks Islands are separated from the Caicos Islands by Turks Island/Cloumbus Passage (more than 2,200 m deep), stretches north-south. The total area is 26.7 square kilometres (10.3 sq mi).

As a British territory, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is the sovereign, represented by a governor. Grand Turk is the administrative and political capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands and Cockburn Town has been the seat of government since 1766. Queen Elizabeth II visited the isles in1966.

The First English visitor to the islands was Captain John Hawkins, who stopped by to pick up salt in 1563.

On the 7th September 2008 Hurricane Ike caused widespread damage to the island of Grand Turk. The estimated 3000 population, suffered 135mph winds, driving rain and lost over 90% of the buildings.
