Rural Egypt 1984, the Lower Nile Valley – Scene 2

            This is one of the many police (or army) check points that we had to go through on most roads in Egypt.  Here we would stop; someone would look inside the car and ask us a few questions, which we didn't understand.  So they let us through. The whole episode would last less than a minute and there was never any hassle.  Judging from the sign on the right, this location is near an intersection and before reaching (i.e. south of) the city Bany Mazar.   This is a good example of the kind of road signs that we had to contend with. And, in this case we were lucky; part of it was written with Roman characters, which was not always the case.
