Lady Jane Grey - Houghton portrait - a photo on Flickriver

Portrait of an aristocratic woman believed to be Lady Jane Grey. The portrait was formerly in the collection of Lord Houghton, and thus is known as the ‘Houghton portrait’. The portrait is almost identical to the one purchased by the National Portrait Gallery in 2006:

There is believed to have been three such paintings; the whereabouts of the third is unknown. The image of the Houghton portrait comes from Eric Ives, Lady Jane Grey: A Tudor Mystery (Wiley-Blackwell, 2009), in which he notes that the portrait appears not to have been used as a source for the NPG portrait. The Houghton portrait is dated to c.1590.

Ives notes in passing that there is the possibility that the sitter is actually Jane Radcliffe, wife of Lord Montague or Jane Seymour, daughter of Edward Seymour, the duke of Somerset. However he questions why portraits of these two women would be created after their deaths – they died in 1552 and 1561 respectively – and argues that the productions of images of Jane Grey, who was regarded by many as a Protestant icon and a former queen regnant, would have been far more appropriate.
