Where The Streets Have No Name

Nobody ever tells you the true horror of urban warfare. Dragging parents from screaming kids in the middle of the night, roadside bombs under piles of garbage, snipers hidden in a sea of windows. Day in and day out we take casualties from people we can't fight back against. On the map, we hold the entire city and surrounding area, on the streets though it's a different story entirely. When we can't find a target to fire back at it gets pent up inside us. A slow building fire. A VBIED went off destroying the front of our armored column. Seven of my team were killed and 4 more suffered various injuries. Today we got held up at an intersection in traffic. The lead armored vehicle opened fire with their fifty and cleared a path before I even realized what was happening. Three kids dead, and eight others were killed, the god damn balls on that trooper. The city burned that night, riots in front of our compounds, a festering wound finally torn open. We'd be lucky to see sunrise, the streets are no longer ours.
