Watering Hole

            This is just a snapshot of one of the most memorable wildlife encounters I have ever had that I want to share with you. Manitoba is in the middle of a drought and while we were visiting a red-sided garter den site south of the famous Narcisse dens we decided to bring a little extra water with us and to distribute some with the potentially thirsty reptiles. What happened after we begun to place several cap fills of water at the den entrance was simply incredible. Snakes literally seemed to pour out of cracked limestone, others already on the surface eagerly slithered to our miniature watering hole. Many took refuge under the shade created by our crouched positions before and/or after their thirst was quenched ...and this has to be a first of sorts..a mating ball materialized under Sara as she sat Indian Style!
