Patton's Sun Proof Paints - a photo on Flickriver

Cantril, Iowa, across from Dutchman's wonderful General Store.

When I first saw this wall sign, I thought it had been repainted since it is so bright and only peeling a little. Then the obvious dawned on me - "Patton's Sun Proof Paints". Could this be truth in advertising? Some really good paint, perhaps? A little research revealed that this very paint was chosen to protect the permanent marker posts along the Lincoln Highway. See the 1923 newspaper ad here. Now isn't that a fun fact to know and tell? (It also doesn't hurt that this sign is on the north side of a building and doesn't see much sun!)

Unfortunately, it's impossible to get a good angle for a photo, since there is one-story bank building in the way . . . and I took this shot on a white-sky day. Bummer. But there you have it, anyway. :o)
