Poem / Thomas Merton / Victor Hammer

            This lovely piece is one of a few proof copies of this poem by Thomas Merton. The poem with the long brass-engraved 'I' was used as the cover of the book Opus XVI. The Solitary Life, written by Merton and published by the Stamperia Del Santuccio, Lexington, Kentucky in 1960. The book was printed in an edition of 60 copies with the assistance of Carolyn Reading Hammer, and was case-bound by Lucy Crump.
