Winking Owl

            Juvenile winking Spotted Eagle-owl photographed in Safaripark Beekse Bergen, zoo and safaripark in Hilvarenbeek, the Netherlands. The owl is here almost three months old.
The African Spotted Eagle-owl (Bubo africanus) is a medium-sized species of owl, one of the smallest of the Eagle owls. Its height is 45 cm and its weight is from 480 to 850 gr. 
Spotted at the trey inhabit most of Africa south of the Sahara desert away from dense forests. They are diurnal hunters, spending the night concealed in trees, rock ledges or abandoned burrows. They are found in areas with rocky outcroppings, scrub land, open woods, and semi deserts. 
Its prey consists of small mammals, birds, insects and reptiles.

Jonge knipogende Afrikaanse Oehoe gefotografeerd in Safaripark Beekse Bergen bij Hilvarenbeek. Het uiltje is hier bijna drie maanden jong.
De Afrikaanse Oehoe (Bubo africanus) is nauw verwant aan de in de Achterhoek en Zuid Limburg voorkomende Europese Oehoe (Bubo bubo). De Afrikaanse Oehoe is met een hoogte van tot 45 cm en een gewicht van 480 à 850 gr. wel aanzienlijk kleiner dan de Europese Oehoe, die 58 à 65 cm hoog wordt en tussen 1,5 kg en 4,2 kg. weegt. De Europese Oehoe is de grootste uilensoort ter wereld en de Afrikaanse Oehoe is juist een kleine uil.
Kenmerkend voor de Afrikaanse Oehoe zijn de grote gele ogen en de oorpluimen.
De Afrikaanse Oehoe leeft in een groot deel van Afrika ten zuiden van de Sahara, vooral in rotsgebieden, open bossen en half woestijnen. Ze zijn overdag actief jagers en houden zich in de nacht verborgen in bomen, richels van rotsen en verlaten holen.
