IMGP3936 Darter

Darters are found in freshwater inland habitats of rivers, lakes, swamps and lagoons. Generally solitary but sometimes seen in loose parties, resting preening and drying wings (the feathers are not waterproof). Its body is usually submerged when swimming its sinuous snake-like neck and head showing, hence its popular name "snakebird"

Breeds irregularily but usually October - March. Nests in a tree above water made up of a substantial platform of twigs and sticks, covered with green branches which droop over the sides. Chicks over two weeks old will instinctively tumble out into the water if threatened then scramble back when all is clear.

Eggs. 3 to 5 greenish and covered with a coating of whitish lime.
