GUAVA #17 (with Fruit Fly Exclusion Bags)

In India, the world's largest producer of Guavas, Guavas are harvested throughout the year (except during May and June) in one or the other region of the country. However, peak harvesting periods in north India are August for rainy season crop, November- December for winter season crop and March-April for spring season crop. In the mild climatic conditions of the other parts of India, the peak harvesting periods are not so distinct.

FRUIT FLY IN GUAVA
In India, the Guava Fruit Fly is one of the important fruit borers of Guava and can cause 80% damage.

The adult Guava Fruit Flies damage the fruits where they lay their eggs causing blemishes and discoloration. The maggots bore into the fruit, develop inside and pave the way for secondary invaders (fungi or bacteria), which cause extensive rotting and dropping of fruit. Damaged fruits are unfit for human consumption.

BAGGING THE GUAVAS
Bagging is a physical protection method which not only improves the visual quality of the fruits by promoting skin coloration and reducing blemishes, but can also change the micro-environment for fruit development, which can have several beneficial effects on the internal fruit quality.

Pre-harvest Bagging of fruit can also reduce the incidence of disease, insect pest and/or mechanical damage, sunburn of the skin, fruit cracking, agrochemical residues on the fruit, and bird damage.

Bagging is extremely labor intensive but because of its many beneficial effects, it has become an integral part of Guava cultivation all over the world.
