SSW #8326 SD-40T2 leads a manifest at Moran California, May 25 1996.

            SSW SD-40T2 #8326 leads a dogs breakfast of a consist on an EUCHQ across the Madeline Plains near Moran California on May 25 1996. The train had left Eugene the day before. South of Klamath Falls near Merrill there was trouble with a busted knuckle, which delayed its progress by at least five hours (the unfolding drama could be heard over the scanner through the night). At sunrise we caught up with it as it approached Stronghold California, the start of a day long chase that would end in the evening at Flanigan Nevada.

At Alturas California, the seven unit consist (which included a C&NW and a CSX unit) was split, with the four trailing units added mid-train for the climb to Sage Hen. At Sage Hen the units were cut back in behind the three lead locomotives. This picture was taken from a large pile of ballast along side of the tracks which could be seen for miles on the flat plain. I think I remember reading it has been hauled off, but I am not sure.

At Wendel the four rear units were once again removed (to be added to the consist of the following days ROEUM for its trip over Sage Hen Summit). The EUCHQ continued on, taking to the old WP at Flanigan Nevada. I can still remember the smell of fresh cut Oregon timber in the desert as its center beams passed by.
