The Firth of Lorn - a photo on Flickriver

The Firth of Lorn

            Don’t be tempted as I was, to leave the track because you think it is taking you off in the wrong direction.  While you will be quite correct, the detour is better than the moorland, walls and fences that have to be negotiated on the route direttissimo!

However, if I hadn’t wandered up here, I would not have had this view, which I have realised since, is even finer than I appreciated at the time!  As indicated by the notes on the photo, the following can be seen – from right to left:  

(1) The island of Colonsay, only just visible, and 52kms away.  (2) Insh Island (which translates as “Island Island”!) 11kms out in the Firth of Lorn.  (3) the islands of Garbh Eileach, which look close to Insh Island, but are actually as far away again at 20kms.  (4) The dark headland of Sloc nan Uan, with a large vessel off to the right of it, part of the mainland, 11kms away.  Out of sight on its far side is the village of Easdale.  (5) The island of Jura, very feint through the gap.  The bit that is visible is probably a part of the hills at the north end of the island, which are 47kms away.  (6) Cruach Scarba, the wedged shaped mountain, on the island of Scarba 25kms away.  (7) Beinn Mhor on the mainland, a mere 5.5kms away.  

And then of course (surprise surprise) in the foreground below – is a castle!  Gylen Castle.  What else would I be here for?!
