Volaterrae, The Roman Volterra - I - a photo on Flickriver

            This archeological area contains the main Volterra’s findings dating from the Roman imperial time. The construction of the major public buildings is due to the most important local families. The theatre was built in the early 1st century A.D. by A. Caecina Severus and his son Sixtus. 
At the foot of the stage there were statues of Roman emperors (at the Guarnacci Museum there are two statues of Augustus and one of Livia). The theatre was modernized and restored several times during the 1st and2nd centuries, and in the 3rd century it was definitively abandoned.
Behind the stage there are an extensive quadrangular portico with an apse on either side, and a building housing baths. The vestibule, the cold “frigidarium” and hot baths “tepidarium” and “calidarium” are still visible. In the far right hand corner is the “laconicum” or “sudatorium”, a circular room which served as a sauna.
During the Medieval period the area was used as a rubbish tip hence the Roman theatre and 
baths were completely buried until excavations began in 1951.
