“Palazzo della Cancelleria Reliefs” III – Frieze B

            The central figure of the bas-relief is recognizable as Vespasian. Dea Roma, the five Vestals, the Genius Senatus, and the Genius Publicus combine to indicate that the scene is Rome and suggest that the occasion is Vespasian's arrival. The event is scarcely likely to have been treated in this way unless Vespasian was already Princeps; and after he attained the Empire in the first days of July, 69, his only return to Rome in circumstances which would justify a monumental representation of the sort which we have in this relief was his arrival from the East in the late summer or early autumn of 70. If this is the date to which the scene should be referred, it follows that the young man in front of Vespasian, who in view of his place and function in the composition can hardly be other than one of Vespasian's sons, must be Domitian; for Domitian was in Rome on this occasion whereas Titus was not. The general appearance of the young prince accords well with the age of Domitian, who completed his nineteenth year on 24th October, 70. Titus was in his thirty-second year when, in the summer of 7I, he reached Rome for the first time after his father's accession.
