Acropolis – XXV: Inside The Parthenon

            The northeast edge column of the pteron. Each column leans slightly inwards, while the corner columns slant diagonally towards the interior, as they are a combination of front and side supports.
The ratio of 4:9 corresponding roughly to the ratio of the height of the temple to its width and of its length to its width, is also the ratio of the span of the columns or capitals (distance from the center of one column to the center of the next) to their height. 
Other proportions are equally simply chosen, as, for example, the relation of the lower column diameter to the height as 1:5. According to this ratio each Doric column have a  slight convex curved shape (called ‘entasis’) which gives rise to the greatest diameter about a third of the way up.
