Aithiopis XXVII – Scene from the Siphnian Treasury in Delphi

            Detail of the figure of Achilles with the distinguishing mark on his shield: the Gorgon‘s head. The horrible, round daemonic face of the Gorgon Medusa, with her bulbous eyes, broad nose, open mouth with protruding tongue, sharp teeth and snakey hair was designed to frighten enemies and as a symbol to ward off danger.
