Saint Nicholas Hellenic Orthodox Cathedral Church (Now Church Of Latter Day Saints)--Detroit MI

            The characteristic dome marks this as a Greek Orthodox church building; but of late it has become a Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) congregation. I'm impressed by the interplay of light and shadow, and the strong basic shapes. Note the variety in windows: single, double and triple grouping.

The building was described soon after its construction as combining modern architecture with the spirit of the Byzantine.

In the 1950s there were four major churches and a synagogue in the Palmer Park area. Saint Nicholas was built in two phases and completed in 1953. The architects were Alexander Eugenides (the lower level) and Harold Fisher (the upper level--the present church buliding).
