Monticello Ballroom Building, 14421-29 East Jefferson Avenue--Detroit MI

            The most famous ballroom along this stretch of East Jefferson is probably the Vanity, but the Monticello certainly held its own as an entertainment venue. It was designed in 1928 by the firm of Pollmar and Ropes and has Spanish Colonial and Art Deco overtones. The Monticello's most prominent features are the tiled end sections at the roofline. The tiles are thought to be from the nearby Pewabic Pottery. The structure is a contributing property to a City of Detroit and National Register historic district.

The Monticello was the venue for many of the city's African American swing bands during its ten year existence. The building remains home to several neighborhood businesses today.
