My grandmother posing with the Our Gang cast, 1931

            from my grandmother Geraldine's diary:

"June 6, 1931 - 
    Betty invited a few of us to go out to the Hal Roach picture studios today. Nedra, Ruth, Joyce and I were invited. Mr. Eberhard took us out and Betty's sister, Mildred went along. We met Mr. Hardy, and also some of the members of "Our Gang". We met Stymey, a little colored boy. He is awfully cute and has the most adorable long, curly eyelashes. We also met Farina. He is just the same as in pictures. And Weezer. He's a regular boy. They even have to hold him between shots. We also saw Fatty, and met Mary Ann. 

"We saw them shoot too. There was just one thing they said. "Isn't it awful. The school house burned down and we can't go to school. The school house burned down and we can't go to school. The school house burned down and we can't go to school." I've got that on my brain I've heard it so much. And, oh, yes. We saw Petey, the dog. He is bigger than i expected and he's awfully friendly. He's sure adorable. 

"We had our picture taken with the gang and I think that we're each going to get one. We also saw Mickey (Daniels) and Mary Corbin, original members of "Our Gang", who now play in "The Boy Friends". Mickey is terrible looking but Mary Corbin is simply adorable."

My grandmother lived in Glendale at the time and had just turned 15 when she wrote that entry. Years later she told me that her friend's dad Mr. Eberhard(?) was a lawyer, or something of that nature, for Hal Roach Studios, which is why they got the special tour. Also she thought the guy on the far right in the photo was Hal Roach but she might be remembering wrong. [Update: it is Ben Shipman. thanks for the added info, Eythe! ]
