Tot i que presenta una imatge practicament del segle XIX, aquest castell manté la forma basica del motte and bailey, que consistia en un turó artificial envoltat per un recinte secundari. Aqui podeu veure la motte (mota en català), amb el castell a sobre. A Oxford hi ha una mota sense res a sobre, en el recinte del castell.

Actualment acull el University College de la University of Durham.

This castle, although rebuilt in XIX Century style, still retains it's primitive shape of motte and bailey. The motte was an artificial hill with a tower on top, and the bailey a secondary fortified area at its feet.

Now the University College is located there.
