Alan Cocksedge Photos 1959-1962 - Wakes Colne - 24th June 1962

            ' Big ' John Burton [ - son of 'Squib' Burton, the speedway rider ] leads Jim Aim. At this particular meeting John was second behind Don Rickman in the Experts, and the Allcomers events, but beat Don in the 350 - 1000 class. Halstead must've been a happy hunting ground for John and the Goldie. On the 6th of October 1963 he was back as a member of the winning Midlands team in that year's Inter Centre Team Scramble, notching a first and a second in his two team rides.

So pleased to be able to post a colour shot of John on his works BSA, and wearing the blue helmet I first saw at Tunnel Hill, Pirbright on 5th June 1960, when he rode for the North in the southern leg of the N v S scramble. Being but a callow youth I expected 'our' team [ the South ] to trounce those Northern invaders. Time for a reality check as double winner* John, and the other members of the Northern team, romped home by 316 points to 292 [ * - the other ' Northern ' winner was Gordon Blakeway ]

It didn't get any better in the 'away' leg at Boltby where Jeff Smith scored three wins, and the overall tally became North 672 points South 557. Ouch!

UPDATE - How quick was John on that Gold Star? It had slipped my memory, but the front page of Motor Cycle News for Wednesday 8th August 1962 carried the headline ' John Burton beats the Swedes ' On the the previous Sunday John had posted third and first places at the Belgian 500 GP to take an overall win. The Citadelle at Namur was a famously demanding circuit. Check out this opposition. John bested the field in a period that saw Husqvarna/Lito/Monark dominance, and the debut of the Mark 3 Metisse -
