37/52 | End Of The Line - a photo on Flickriver

            This is the last photo I took of Cody before he died Tuesday afternoon.  It will also be my last contribution to the 52 weeks for dogs group.

Cody and I had a good last few days.  He was full of energy the last day we spent at the beach.  On our walks he started tugging on the leash which usually I find irritating but it actually made me glad.  While at the campground he wanted to go down and explore every trail we ran across.  We got back to Walla Walla over the weekend, after Dad died, and he continued to have high energy and was alert and happy.  In fact on Monday night he once again ripped Mr. Corno to pieces.  Stuffing and squeakers everywhere!

Tuesday morning he seemed fine and after working over at Dad's house for a few hours Cody and I took a nap.  When we got up from the nap around 4 pm I could tell something was bothering him.  I gave him his pills and then took a few photos of him lying on the kitchen floor.  After a bit it became obvious that he was rapidly growing weak and could no longer stand.  His gums were no longer pink and healthy looking.  He was bleeding internally again and it must've been a major bleed.  I was in shock.

I sat with him a while, thinking about what I wanted to do and what was possible.  I laid with him, stroking him, talking to him, and finally picked him up and drove to the local vet's office.  I knew there was a possibility that he could survive this episode but that looked doubtful and there would only be another and another until finally he died.   I couldn't put him through that.  He didn't deserve it and I didn't want him to suffer any more than he already had.

Our last moments together were as good as they could be.  I will never forget this dog, my friend, who gave so much of himself to me when I needed it.
