Pheasant (melanistic), Great Hockham (Norfolk), 12-Mar-06

            Male.  Melanistic birds like this are becoming increasingly common round here.  They are very attractive birds, the colour of the body appearing blue, green, purple or black depending on how the light catches it.  There is a superficial resemblance to Japanese Green Pheasant Phasianus versicolor and although that species is being reported a lot recently, I'm fairly sure that the reports in fact relate to these melanistic Common or Ring-necked Pheasants Phasianus colchicus.
