280 Squadron Vickers Warwick - a photo on Flickriver

            280 Squadron were an Air Sea Rescue Unit equipped with the Vickers Warwick, the Warwick, originally designed as a bomber and constructed of the same geodetic structure as the Wellington, carried an Airborne Lifeboat which was dropped by parachute to ditched aircrew. 280 were the first of the three wartime Thornaby based ASR Squadrons and arrived shortly after the ASR Training Unit in late 1943, this aircraft, out somewhere over the North Sea, has already dropped its Lifeboat. 

It's hard to imagine the overwhelming sense of relief that a ditched aircrew must have felt when one of these aircraft found them and dropped a Lifeboat nearby, unfortunately, by the time they reached the search area they would often come across either body's, empty dinghy's, or nothing at all.
