URUCUZEIRO / Lipstick Tree / Bixa orellana

            Nativo da America tropical , o Urucuzeiro e' uma curiosidade botanica: ele e' o unico genero e especie da familia das Bixaceas, com exceçao de uma variedade cultivada com folhas variegadas.Com crescimento rapido e' tambem uma planta decorativa e imune a pragas.
Os indigenas brasileiros sao grandes admiradores do fruto dessa arvore, o urucu.
Comercialmente , depois de secas as sementes do urucuzeiro sao transformadas em colorau.

A native to tropical America, it is a botanical curiosity in that it is the only genera and species in the Bixaceae family, with the exception of a cultivar with variegated leaves.It is fast-growing and rangy, requiring space, and is also decorative and pest-free.
Brazilian Indians value Lipstick Tree and call it Urucu. They believe the red seeds symbolize blood, a metaphor for life and power. The seeds, carried in bamboo containers, are believed to ward off evil spirits present in the air, the rivers and forests.
Commercially , the seeds are dried and groun into a power a commonly know as COLORAU in Brazil and it is used for coloring food, vanishes and principally butter, margarine and cheese.
