Éfeso fue una de las doce ciudades jónicas ubicadas sobre el mar Egeo, situada entre el extremo norte de Panayr Dağ (el antiguo monte Pion) y la desembocadura del río Caístro y tenía un puerto llamado Panormo. Al este se hallaban, la colina de Ayasoluk, con el valle a sus pies, y la población actual de Selçuk, cerca del mar, el monte Pion y el monte Coreso (actual Bulbul Dagh), a cuyos pies se hallaba la ciudad antigua. Esteban de Bizancio menciona el mito de que se llamó Esmirna, nombre tomado de una amazona. Otros nombres que se le dieron fueron Samorna, Trecheia, Ortigia y Ptelea. La fundación de la Éfeso griega en el siglo XI a. C. se debe a colonos atenienses liderados por el hijo del rey Codros, de nombre Androclo, aunque una leyenda se la atribuye a las Amazonas.
