Charles Fort - a photo on Flickriver

Charles Fort

            The fort sits on the edge of Kinsale harbor in West Cork.  This shot fails to highlight the classic star-shape or any of the five bastions, but I was more interested in showing the barracks and interior buildings, and surrounding environment.  The weather and light were terrible, which resulted in the lighthouse blending in with the water and the sailboats parked in the background to fade out.  Pity.  I still like the shot though.  Built in the 1670s on the site of an earlier Norman fortification, this space was used as a British stronghold through the centries until it was burned during the Irish Civil War in 1922.  County Cork, Ireland.  December 2006.
