The object in this photograph represents the convergence of two different revelations: (1) That Sonobe modules are capable of creating just about any polyhedron which is composed of squares and triangles; and (2) That the late Thoki Yenn's Umulius Rectangulum, of which various photographs can be found here on Flickr, can be evenly subdivided into cubes. 30 cubes, to be exact, as each "half-ring" can be subdivided into exactly five cubes.

From there, it was the work of a moment to calculate how many square faces there would be if an Umulius Rectangulum were subdivided into cubes (17 * 6 = 102), and from that, how many edges there would be (204, since there are 102 squares * 4 edges per square, divided by 2 because each edge is shared by two neighboring squares.) So I determined a color scheme and began folding 204 Sonobe modules. I did not quite know how I would achieve my goal when I started, but I did know that it was possible. Less than a week later, I was done.

Putting this thing together was, for me, quite non-intuitive, as I had never done anything like it before. I had a lot of false starts and more misgluings than I care to mention--especially due to the confusing color scheme. In the end, I only succeeded by very closely following an existing photograph of an Umulius Rectangulum.
