San Diego, CA Mission Valley Center ~ May Company [now Macy's]

            The Mission Valley Center May Company was designed by William Lewis who worked for AC Martin in Los Angeles. It is an outstanding Mid-century Modern design, unfortunately the restaurant under that crumpled-plate roof is only used for storage now.

Mission Valley Center was developed by May Centers (part of the old May Department Stores Company that owned the May Company) in the late 1950s and it opened in 1960 with a May Company and a Montgomery Wards. The mall expanded in the mid-1970s with the addition of a Bullock's and then again in the early 1980s with a Saks Fifth Avenue. In the early 1990s, May Stores merged Robinson's and May Company together to form Robinson's-May. Saks moved over to Fashion Valley Mall in the mid-1990s, and the Bullock's became a Macy's Home Store after Macy's acquired the Broadway over at Fashion Valley. The Montgomery Ward chain was shuttered in 2001 and the building became a Target. In the mid-aughts, Macy's acquired the May Stores and the Robinson's-May was rebranded Macy's (even though there is another Macy's over at the nearby Fashion Valley Mall).
