Canon Demi EE17 - a photo on Flickriver

Canon Demi EE17

The Canon Demi is a half-frame 35mm rangefinder. That means two photos on every standard 35mm frame. Neat huh? The sleek styling is very nice, too. Unfortunately recent testing has shown that the shutter is jammed. I'm thinking of sending it to KEH for repair.

UPDATE 1/1/09: Since posting this photo I've gained some experience with repairing and cleaning cameras, so I decided to revisit the EE17 before finally sending off for repair.

Using a lens spanner I removed the front retaining ring and aperture selection rings, and then unscrewed the front element of the lens. After some careful pressure with a toothpick the leaf shutter unstuck itself and popped open, completing the firing cycle and freeing the wind lever. Yay! Then I set it to a slower speed and it got stuck again. Boo!

Oh well, I expected that. I injected a little Ronsonol into the exposed parts of shutter mechanism (I use a discarded insulin needle) and exercised it for about 10 minutes at various speeds, lightly wiping the blades with a soft cloth to remove the dissolving gunk. I also injected a little under the base of the wind lever and into the cable release socket on shutter plunger, just to get rid of that "mushy" feeling from sticky old grease.

I'll let it dry out for a while. I will probably have to repeat this procedure a time or two before it stays unstuck and firing well at all speeds, especially outside in cold weather. After that I'll take it out and test it!

I'm thrilled. I was really worried that the wind linkage was bowed, which is harder to fix. Good information: Favorite Classics / Canon Demi
