Half Dome from Olmsted Point | Yosemite NP

Olmsted Point (⬆elevation 8,300'/2,500m) is a popular pullout on Tioga Road. You can, as many do, hop out of your car and take a quick snapshot or selfie with Half Dome off in the distance and then drive on to the next attraction. However, if you are not rushed for time try a short, easy decent down the path to the granite ledge for a more breathtaking view of Half Dome.

• Zuiko Digital 14-54mm f 2.8/3.5 lens
• Save to Olympus RAW (ORF)
• Panorama stitched from seven images.

Workflow
• rawtherapee v4.2 to "develop" seven RAW ORF (Olympus RAW) images. For each of the seven adjust their exposure to -1.0ev, 0.0ev, and +1.0ev. Save each exposure to a 16-bit TIFF for a total of 21 TIFF images (7 images x 3 exposures = 21).
• enfuse v4.2 to blend each image's exposure stack. I.e. (en)fuse the -1.0ev, 0.0ev, and +1.0ev images into a single 16-bit TIFF image. In the end there will be a panorama stitched (next step) from the seven (en)fused TIFF images.*
• hugin v2016.2.0 to stitch a equirectangular panini projected panorama image from the seven enfused 16-bit TIFFs. Save the panorama as a 16-bit TIFF image.
• rawtherapee again, to convert the panoramic color image into a black-and-white image using the film simulation feature HALD CLUT (Color LookUp Table) pattern files. I.e. take the panorama image and simulate a Ilford HP5 film capture.
• GIMP v2.8.18
▹ Remove, with Heal-Selection plugin (similar to Photoshop's Content-Aware Fill) out-of-focus, overhanging tree branches
▹ Crop to final size
▹ Add copyright text to lower-right of the image
• Apply output sharpening with Focus Magic.†
• exiftool v10.23 to copy the .ORF EXIF tags back into the final JPEG. And to set other tags, e.g. keywords.
• digikam v5.4.0 to geotag image (using its GPS track log time-correlation feature).
• Linux Kubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak).
• MSI GT683 laptop with an Intel i7-2630QM Quad-core 2.0GHz processor and w/16GB RAM.

* Automation software was employed to reduce the large number of image processing steps involving rawtherapee and enfuse.

† Focus Magic is a Windows application. To run it on Linux, WINE v1.8.5 is required.
