Green Darner, Anax junius - a photo on Flickriver

            A mating pair in tandem linkage, (the “wheel position"). The male (above) has clasped the female by her “neck”. He has already transferred sperm from his genital opening in his ninth segment to a storage organ in his second.  She curls her abdomen forward to contact the opening to this storage organ. They may remain in this position for several hours, often “flying united”.

This is the official insect of the state of Washington and is known to migrate from the northern USA south as far as Mexico.
