Taree's Peters Creameries Pty. Limited was a vital part of the Taree and Manning Valley community and provided employment for many local residents for 40 years.
The factory was part of Peters larger business which was based in Sydney and founded in 1907. The Taree Factory had various owners during its productive life manufacturing ice cream, milk powders, butter, oil, yogurt and other dairy products here in Chatham, Taree between 1939 and the late 1980's.
It is my understanding that the site is now owned by Stacks, the Taree Law Firm.
The site is listed on Taree City Council's (Now Mid Coast Council) Heritage Register but presumably it is being allowed to fall into disrepair with no plans for any restoration.

"In 1939, Peters’ Creameries Pty Ltd established their new factory at Taree, taking advantage of a location on the railway siding from the main Northern line to the Manning River. This siding serviced several dairy product businesses along the Manning River and each had their own Wharf. Peters’ had boats built (known as Cream Boats) for the collection of milk and cream from dairy farms along the River. The milk cans were unloaded at the wharf and transported to their nearby processing factory by rail. The cost of building the factory was approx. £60,000 and started with the production of condensed milk for the manufacture of ice cream and also butter for the local trade. The plant had a capacity for the treatment of 1,000 gallons of milk an hour. The business was such a success that by September 1940 plans were put in place to carry out a £30,000 extension to the plant to deal with dried milk products and increase production capacity. Around this time staff amenities buildings were added including a canteen, recreation hall and swimming pool. The Peters’ Ice Cream factory was an important business to the economy of Taree and the local dairy farmers. As the decades progressed, the company changed ownership several times and each new owner would look for ways to increase profits and cut costs. By the late 1980s the plant was considered too inefficient and a decision was made to wind down operations in Taree and move production to more modern facilities. In 1990, The Peters Ice Cream Factory was listed on the Heritage Register of The Greater Taree City Council. The buildings have now sat idle for many years, attracting vandalism and graffiti while awaiting a new use. The railway siding was officially decommissioned in 2007, but much of the track remains in place, as does the remnants of the wharf."
