I believe these unusual grid-like jet trails were un-related to the Space Shuttle pass-over event which occurred on the next day. Unfortunately I did not see the Shuttle pass over, even though I was down in the Bay area during part of that day.
The NASA Space Shuttle Endeavour returned to Earth having completed its last ever mission. It passed over San Francisco mounted on a Boeing Jet on its way to a museum in Los Angeles on the day after this image was taken.

### - Bin53 Shiraz suggested in his comment below that these are not jet or con trails but chemtrails or aerosol trails .
I note however that he has since removed his comment so I did a bit of research myself and here are a few links.
