The history behind this book…
I met Lino Pedroso some decades ago, not knowing that he was one of the most important Cuban Painters of all time.
After becoming acquainted w. each other, he was fascinated by my short stories, and I explained to him that I could use some illustrations.
He asked me for a copy of one of the stories and a few days later, he came with this awesome illustration.
So I figured, this gentleman is basically a genius, but why does he keep himself unknown?
Later on, Lino tells me that he has been sentenced in absentia to death, by the government of Fidel Castro, that he fled in the 60's from Cuba, and that he'd rather remain anonymous for the rest of his life, to protect himself.
So, I told him, "Maybe you can use a Pen Name", and he came up with the Latinized version of his own name, "LINVS"
He made all the illustrations for this book, and we both loved the interaction and creation.
In my mind, I was saving this man's legacy, for the world to see one of the greatest painters in the history of mankind.
He did pass away some years back, and I'd always remember and honor his work and name.
As Lino would say: "I have a son, his name is Branko, but he came out a little bigger than me, almost like the Muralist from Mexico, Diego Rivera"
When Lino fled Cuba, the Art Museum in Habana, had over 200 of his works. The same government, went and put all of those artworks in hiding. The same government also went to his house, and sequestered all they could find about Lino, they basically obliterated his name from history.
It is well known that some art galleries and art dealers in Europe and the US, from time to time, make available artworks from all of the "banned" Cuban artists, to private collections.
In my case, I decided to let the world see, the beauty of this great painter, Lino Pedroso.
