A view from under the MacArthur Causeway - Miami This is a three exposure HDR image. Taken at Watson Island have a look in the set ( Florida holiday Jan/Feb 2009 ) for more photos from our trip and I will try to add more when I can.... www.flickr.com/photos/canmom/sets/72157613142193870/ The MacArthur Causeway is a six lane highway that links downtown Miami, Florida with the city of Miami Beach. The roadway (State Road A1A) crosses the Biscayne Bay south of the Venetian Causeway and north of the Port of Miami. Along the way it passes along and over several islands, including Watson Island, Palm Island, Hibiscus Island, Star Island, and an unnamed island formed by the fill from dredging a channel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Port. The dock of the Fisher Island Ferry and an intersection with Alton Road (SR 907) mark the eastern end of the causeway. Adjacent to the Miami Herald building, the western end leads to Interstate 395 and the Dolphin Expressway. (Wikipedia) Watson Island is an island in Biscayne Bay, close to Downtown Miami, Florida. The island is connected to the mainland of city of Miami and to city of Miami Beach by the Macarthur Causeway. It was created by land reclamation in 1926 with material dredged from the ship channel to the Port of Miami, and was originally named Causeway Island. The island was later named for John W. Watson, Sr., who was Mayor of Miami 1912-1915 and 1917-1919. The Goodyear Blimp base in Florida was located on Watson Island for many years.Vestiges of the old base still remain such as the imprint of the mooring circle and a paved path for a small tram that would transport passengers to the airship. As of 2004, the State of Florida was offering a site in the Island Gardens project on Watson Island to host the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) Permanent Secretariat. As of March, 2006 the Florida Department of Transportation is planning to construct a tunnel from the Port of Miami on Dodge Island under the main shipping channel to the Macarthur Causeway on Watson Island *************************************************************************************** Back home in Antalya however I am missing this wonderful city and had such a great time on holidays...
