            Gaius Caesar was the eldest son of Julia (Augustus' daughter) and Agrippa (his deputy). Gaius was an obvious successor to Augustus and started his military and civic career when is was very young. His ultimely death, during a compaign against Parthia in the east provoked unparalleled national mourning.
