Der Ort ist den meisten wohl nur als Autobahnkreuz bekannt - zu Unrecht, gibt es hier do so einige Entdeckungen zu machen. Der mittelalterliche Stadtkern ist heute noch gut erkennbar, die Backstein-Stadtmauer ist fast vollständig erhalten. Auch Teile einer Burg sind erhalten.

Über viele Jahrhunderte war der Ort ein Zentrum der Tuchherstellung – zunächst in handwerklicher Tradition, später stark industriell geprägt. Anfang 19. Jahrhundert gab es über 80 Tuchmanufakturen. Es folgte ein Konzentrationsprozess, sodass am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts  nur noch zwei Fabriken übrig waren.

Diese Tuchfabrik wurde 1822 gegründet und befand sich mitten im Stadtkern. Durch Tode des Besitzers wechselte das Unternehmen im Jahr 1900 den Besitzer für 1,1 Millionen Mark. Diese Unternehmerfamilie gehört heute zu den reichsten und einflussreichsten in der Bundesrepublik. Weil die Gebäude über die ganze Stadt verteilt waren und die Technik stark veraltet, erbaute der neue Besitzer außerhalb der Stadtmauer von 1905 bis 1906 die neue Fabrik. Hergestellt wurde Militärbekleidung. 

1911 wurde der letzte örtliche Konkurrent übernommen. Letztendlich gründeten die deutschen Tuchfabriken faktisch ein Kartell und bestimmten so die Preise auf dem Markt. Vor allem die Zulieferer hatten darunter zu leiden. 

Vom ersten Weltkrieg konnte die Fabrik erheblich profitieren. Militärausrüstung wurde dringend benötigt. Die Gewinnspannen waren außerordentlich hoch.

Doch nach dem ersten Weltkrieg war die Blütezeit der Tuchherstellung in Deutschland vorbei. Im zweiten Weltkrieg schließlich wurden in der Fabrik Flugzeugteile moniert.

Zu DDR-Zeitenwurde die Anlage zumindest teilweise als Möbelfabrik ungenutzt, aber auch der VEB „Obertrikotagen“ hatte hier weiter einen Standort. Nach der Wende wurde von Investoren versucht, den Möbelbetrieb weiterzuführen. Seit ca. 1994 steht die Anlage komplett leer.

The place is the most well-known only as the motorway intersection - wrongly, there is here do so to make some discoveries. The medieval city center is still recognizable; the brick city wall is almost completely preserved. Parts of a castle are preserved.

Over many centuries the city was a center of cloth production - first in craft tradition, later embossed heavily industrialized. Beginning of the 19th century, there were over 80 cloth manufactories. It was followed by a process of concentration, so that at the end of the 19th century, only two factories were left.

This cloth factory was founded in 1822 and was located right in the city core. Through death of the owner, the company moved in 1900 to the owners of 1.1 million deutschmarks. This family business is one of the richest and most influential in germany. Because the buildings were spread over the whole town and had strongly outdated technology, the new owner built outside the city walls from 1905 to 1906, the new factory. It was a fabrik for military clothing.

1911, the last local competitor was acquired. Ultimately, founded the German textile mills in fact a cartel and thus determined the prices on the market. In particular, the supplier had to suffer.

From the First World War, the factory was able to benefit significantly. Military equipment was urgently needed. The profit margins were exceptionally high.

But after World War II, the heyday of cloth production was over in Germany. During World War II finally airplane parts were build in the factory.

In GDR times the installation has been at least partially unused as furniture factory, but also the VEB "top hosiery" had here on one site. After the german turn, there where tries by investors, to continue the furniture operation. Since about 1994, the buildings are completely empty.
