Quiet Rapture

            The thin crescent of the waning new moon slips through ribbons of cloud as the last light of day flares magnificently over the Henry Mountains and the canyons carved by the lower reaches of the Green River. Taken from Grandview Point, Island in the Sky, Canyonlands National Park, Utah.

My brother and I made a visit to Grandview Point for sunrise and moonset on Boxing Day of 2015. The experience was bracing, wonderful, cold, and also fairly miserable due to the 16 ˚F temperatures and 25 mph winds. Because of these conditions the remainder of my dear family opted to stay warm and comfortable and thus had yet to experience this particular vista in person. On this trip the November weather was mild, and I thought it would be a fine opportunity to make a pilgrimage to land’s end so my wife and son could witness moonset and sunset at the same time in front of one of nature’s most intricately carved erosional masterpieces. I checked the weather earlier in the day and the forecast was for partial clouds, which seemed promising.

On the drive to Grandview Point the light became wan and flat and did not seem promising. I convinced myself that a walk with my youngest son and darling wife would be reward in itself, and that the sunset would most likely be a dud, photographically speaking. As is obvious, I am apparently rubbish when it comes to predicting light and transcendent atmospherics. Not wanting to hike in complete darkness, my family returned to the car before me, while I lingered to absorb every last red gleam emanating from the clouds. When the stars began to peer through the blue, I realized I left my headlamp in the vehicle. Fortunately, I like hiking in the dark.
