Rupea, the fortress and the city - a photo on Flickriver

            Rupea is a town in Brasov, Transylvania, Romania. It has a population of 5.269 inhabitants (2011)

It was a Dacian settlement (Rumidava) and later, during the Roman occupation, the name was changed to Rupes (rock or stone - in Latin).

Fortress Rupea was build on Cohalm Hill, overlooking the city and was build and extended in centuries XIV-XVII as a fortress and refuge for the surrounding villages. It became a ruin and was renovated in 2013. The walls form four areas strengthened from place to place with polygonal towers, the movement being controlled with several interior doors compartimenteazǎ fortified whole.
