L'Abbaye aux Dames

            The Abbaye aux Dames is a former abbey in Caen, now home to the "Conseil Régional de Basse Normandie". 
The abbey was founded in the late 11th century by William the Conqueror and his wife Matilda as the Abbaye aux Dames ("Abbey of Women").
It includes the church now known as the "Église de la Sainte Trinité".
Matilda, who died in 1083, was buried in the choir under a slab of black marble.

L'Abbaye aux Dames est l'une des deux grandes abbayes de Caen. L'église abbatiale de la Trinité abrite depuis 1083 le tombeau de Mathilde de Flandre, épouse de Guillaume le Conquérant. L'abbaye est le siège du Conseil régional de Basse-Normandie depuis 1986.
