THE LION'S HEAD - a Bronze & Mosiac Tile Water Fountain

Located in the Loggia this bronze and tile fountain art work anchors the west end of the West or Sunken Garden at the George Eastman House/ and Museum in Rochester, NY US

This is one of my favorite worked and enhanced images. It was taken in 2013 as one of a series of images of the Spring Gardens at the George Eastman House - Museum of Film

This fountain intrigued me since I first saw it. I tried various ways to capture it - well its essence. Periodically I'd work on one or more of the images. Now finally I can say it is finished.

This image is finally satisfying. I like the light, the color, the focus, the intensity, the balance, the symmetry - okay you see that I like it and just enjoy looking at it.

WEST GARDEN HISTORY : The West Garden

Built in 1917, the West Garden was designed by architect Claude Bragdon, who modeled it after an English walled garden designed by Sir Edward Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll at Hestercombe House in Somerset, England. The garden has been altered many times over the years—first by Eastman in 1921, when he added a Paul Manship sundial. In 1936, the garden was changed again using a plan of Robert Chamberlain, and in 1960, it was redesigned by Nancy Newhall, wife of the museum’s director at the time, Beaumont Newhall. In 1983, the Rochester Garden Club sponsored a partial restoration of the garden and that rendition is what visitors enjoy today. eastman.org/mansion-gardens
